A manager overseeing multiple support functions was overwhelmed by his to-do lists and knew he could be more effective. Although his days were so busy he often worked nights and weekends to get caught up, he knew he wasn’t working on the most important things. Always aspiring to learn more and be a better leader, he reached out for coaching…

JCG’s principal coach Jane Cavanaugh helped him assess how he was spending his time–what did he accomplish, where did he stall out? The coaching process revealed he was the most productive and clear-headed first thing in the morning, but he wasted his best thinking time answering emails and clearing small actions off his list. He never had enough energy left in the afternoon for the heavy lifting of strategic thinking and long-term projects.

The desire to “get a lot done” first thing in the morning was hard to overcome, but Jane helped him learn how to create small, clear next action steps to take on his most important long-term projects. He designed a comfortable new routine of tackling the most important actions first thing each day. He learned through coaching how to weave the easier tasks throughout the day to give himself a “brain break” or build up momentum and energy to tackle the harder strategic thinking tasks. Working with Jane, he incorporated best practices for delegating effectively. His staff were motivated and engaged by the new opportunities he passed along; he was able to focus on long-term solutions instead of daily fire-fighting.

One-on-one coaching can provide more personal insight and impactful solutions than a one-size-fits-all training class or book.
